My work has been heavily inspired by the human experience. Particularly about how we feel when we encounter art, and how it influences our day to day lives. I have always been interested in the kind of art that challenges, whether it’s through physical interaction or psychologically. In saying this, my work has a strong focus on challenging the viewer’s (as well as my own) irrational fears; confronting what makes us uncomfortable.
I have previously explored many avenues within this theme, although for this piece I wanted to create an installation resulting from my investigation into using light as a sculptural material. I became very intrigued with the sensory experience of light interacting with colour that creates emotive, psychological effects on the viewer.
Perplexed is a piece that explores the transformation of light and colour combined with the movement of the spiked pendulum which hangs from the ceiling by a single thread. Through this, we explore the psychological effects of the kaleidoscopic visuals as well as the stress from the suspended ball of spikes that may collapse.
