Kate De La Motte

Through a focus on the physicality of material and process my works aim to find a way for materials to reflect the self-reflexive vulnerability of making and the presence of the artist in the work.

My practice is an investigation into the external manipulation and exploration of materials – through mark-making, gesture and physicality – and an internal examination of the changing emotional and physical states that occur through making work.

Narrative elements around this process are explored by recording and archiving images and videos of myself making work. This becomes source material I then use as evidence of different points in time of my process. However, seeing the representational elements of self-portraiture as unimportant to my practice, I experiment with fragmentation of the figure to reveal the more emotional aspects involved in the act of making.
