Marnie Walshe
My practice consists of a wide range of organic shapes and forms that I create through different techniques like lost wax carving for jewellery making and using clay for ceramics. For this project I was stuck indoors with the COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne, so I decided to base my project on the ancient technique of paper mache. Taking inspiration from the natural world, The Promise Land is an installation of a futuristic wonderland where the anthropomorphised animal kingdom roams the land alongside the humans in a fairy tale-like setting. It expresses the ideal of returning to the glory days of no capitalism whilst also diving into a positive future.
In this project I have incorporated a wide range of recycled materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill. I have also incorporated polymer clay, acrylic paint and natural materials like seashells and wood. The main theme of this installation is positivity towards our future, with climate change as the underlying issue but something we can combat if our morals are in order. This is the evolution of positivity.
