Through the development of a multidisciplinary practice I am undertaking research focused on unveiling the falsified and stereotypical representations of women+ within westernised mainstream media, and therefore society.
This includes how perceptions of women+ in an internationally patriarchal system are formed through negative effects. English media theorist, Professor Joanna Zylinska recognises that within the determinations of mainstream media: “Faces and bodies require incessant adjustment not just because they are subject to an implacable regime of ideal images, but because they are in competition with images that constantly readjust their look.” (The Cyborg Experiments, 2002, p. 150).
Through practice-led research I am examining changing public insights around ideas of diversity and gender equality as well as investigating my own personal contexts that are inextricably central to this research impetus. This involves visual expressions of digitally distorted traditional collage, painting and printmaking methods as well as video performance, all in relation to post-humanist feminist ideologies. Promoting self-awareness and gaining critical thinking skills with what we see and consume within our media systems is what my research aims to achieve through the use of satirical uncanny caricature. I am focusing on areas informed by understanding personal therapeutic interventions, for the purpose of restructuring my own psyche as well as framing studio research as advocacy and striving to use art practice as an intervention and disruption in support for true gender equality.
