Burnt Out is a filmic series of images crafted out of a burgeoning feature film script. Functioning in the canon of Unit Stills – imagery from films shot during production for the purpose of advertisement and documentation – I have imagined the visual language and tonality of a film. One that is yet to be made.
Synopsis: "As a firestorm ravages their hometown, three young adults are drawn home to help their families and an old friend. The reunion reignites old inadequacies and trauma; shame, guilt and regret haunt them from adolescence. Old flames and tormentors reignite suppressed conflicts of morality and identity. This is a story of the revelatory years that define life as we unpack our adolescence. Before we find our place in the world, we must first define ourselves."
Professionally, my aspirations lie at the junction of acting, film making, and photography. This project has been an ideal format to explore where each of these storytelling mediums overlap for great effect.
Through writing the script; extracting definitive visual moments; storyboarding; casting; coordinating locations and props; and planning lighting and overarching visual elements collectively, this was a creative and logistical challenge. A compounding of challenges which filmmaking is bound to.
Ultimately, I sought to create a format that would epitomise the visceral potential of my film.
