Angst & Optimism.

We’ve been forced to pause and adapt at the cusp of a new decade that has brought increasing angst about political issues regarding climate change, diversity and equality. We all feel frustration at the loss of normality, opportunities and important moments especially in Melbourne where many of us feel depleted.

Personally, I’ve felt disconnected from who I am as I found my identity was strongly tied to a style of fashion photography that I’ve been unable to pursue. So I adapted. Finding an unusual comfort in photographing myself instead, and chasing streams of light through windows.

Similarly, the fashion industry was forced to take a brief pause. At the same time a growing number of voices suggest it should also adapt to better suit our planet and diverse society. There is a strong push for a more circular, slower and inclusive industry, and optimism about the possibilities it could bring.

In conversations amongst the fashion industry, it seems conceivable that through this angst and trauma occurring within months some change has to take place. For this reason, I’m exploring the conflicting feelings of angst and optimism we experience in light of this current climate.
