Amanda Westmorland
My name is Amanda Westmorland. I’m a 21 year old female photographer who engages in digital and film photography. I am continually practicing with new techniques and I love to challenge the idea of photography. Processes demonstrated within my work include physical installations, manual and digital collage, pin-pricking and the use of mixed-media elements. I use photography as a tool to express my interests and showcase my travels alongside friends and family.
I was introduced to the world of photography when my uncle gifted me with my first manual 35mm camera at the age of 16. Through learning photography in high school and at RMIT, I have engaged in practices I never thought I could achieve. Finalising my studies at university with my latest series, The Light within our Flora, recaps my creative journey through the years, putting forward photographs that maintain my love for challenging photography and creating work that tests the norms of what a photograph can be.
The Light within our Flora signifies Australia's heritage and unique features. Utilising the technique of pin-pricking within this series highlights the distinctiveness of several native flora. Manipulating the print allows my interpretation of the flora's significance to exert life through the addition of light. The illumination within the prints – through the pin pricks – constructs the soul of the plant’s life. The element of light embodies the diverse characteristics of our ecosystems and the unique flora and fauna contained within Australia.
