Flotsam and Jetsam.

“Flotsam and Jetsam”: debris left afloat after a ship has sunk, left to the mercy of the ocean tides. Much like the cargo of a shipwreck, the direction of this year has been unpredictable and to a large extent uncontrollable.

My series Flotsam and Jetsam metaphorically represents this year with six images inspired by the idea of a shipwreck, the individuals in the images being the floating debris. Without clear vision of our futures, many of us feel as though we have been in limbo, living day by day but feeling disconnected and uncertain of our purpose.

The key themes of isolation and connectedness have been explored by manipulating individuals into unrecognisable and isolated landscapes. The series follows the individuals through these environments as if they were wreckage floating lawlessly until they become beached. The purpose of these individuals being cut clearly into the frame is to highlight how we have been struggling to connect with this current environment.

Another key aspect of the individuals being edited into one frame is to show how we have adopted new means of staying connected without ever truly being together.
