Kyriaki Teo

I, Kyriaki Teo, am a mixed media artist and designer based in Melbourne, Australia. My visual work showcases my internal dialogue in relation to my Greek Australian heritage and the social and political issues I face. Furthermore, my works of art challenge social constructs and the power of humanity, particularly on the subject of self-enlightenment.

My work is process-based, and my use of materials are guided by their cultural symbolism, location and origin. They are employed to create narratives of displacement, dislocation and of evolution (physically and/or metaphorically). My works are often concerned with memory and transition, and range from sculptural objects made from plaster and various ‘new age’ industrial materials to acrylic gouache paintings, video and photographic excerpts. The developmental processes of the above works are a key part of the work. Their forms generally result in two- and three-dimensional objects that speak of place and domesticity, referencing the past while also creating a sense of need for humanitarian advancement. My work has been showcased in numerous group exhibitions within Australia since 2010, enabling me to curate various successful shows in the past decade. Beyond my personal practice I endeavour to spread my passion for the arts as I believe in the therapeutic and liberating power of creativity.
