Mia Novakovic
My work references ideas to do with inner and outer worlds, particularly the way that the subconscious, the conscious mind and the physical body interact. We are familiar with the idea that the ‘self’ consists of these three elements working in harmony, but what happens when these elements become ‘out of sync’?
When the notion of ‘self’ is challenged, everyday life becomes surreal. The subconscious mind, the conscious mind and the physical body can move at different rates and on different planes. To constantly exist on multiple planes becomes so confusing that eventually some planes come to be completely out of reach from others.
Through juxtaposing elements of realism and crudely painted fantasy, my work aims to convey the disconnecting and reconnecting of elements of the self.
