In my research project I have been interested in exploring trauma through art and psychology.

Considering softness as both a materiality and a sentiment, I find myself making works with bedding, garments and yarn. These materials are often found in memories of childhood play and curiosity. The language of trauma intercepting this materiality creates a tension of a new visual space: a space before and after the trauma.

These artworks are full of contradictions. Many of the artworks are both abject and abstract, sentimental yet tense, soft yet taut. Through this dialogue I aim to create a new language: a visual language to describe post-trauma.

We hunger for artworks that will compensate for our inner fragilities and help return us to a viable mean… Art holds out the promise of inner wholeness.” (De Botton & Armstrong 2013)
