Returning.

In this series of work, I explore an area I knew as a child: the natural environment of the Adelaide Hills. I found myself searching for ways to materialise the introspective and physical sensations that arise through my relationship with this landscape. The sense of swelling in anticipation, or stillness through moments of change, from light to dark, from calm to storm.

I am interested in the agency that materials can have. I gathered coal and ashes from burn-off piles and the studio fireplace, and collected sandstone and clay from the site on which the studio stands. From these materials I made paint to create an embodied and visceral relationship to the time and place in which they were made. In this installation, the works have been returned to the pine forest, a site that has been a source of ongoing inspiration and material engagement.

Left un-stretched, the materiality of the canvas and the grainy texture of the paint and other materials are integral to the process and work. Engaging with ideas around the sensory and ephemeral nature of memory, site, decay and process, this series offers a hopeful calling to slow down to build more nurturing and sustainable relationships with our local, natural environments.
