ROOTS is a story of nature’s capability to prevail over human life. Each photograph, in chronological order, illustrates nature’s attack on the human form as the figure intrudes within the natural space, creating a confronting yet beautiful aesthetic.
The series begins with an almost insignificant inclusion of the natural elements on the human form, and more are introduced as the photographs progress. The continuity of details helps to create flow and narrative within the series, giving motion and life to the natural elements.
With a lot of time and patience invested towards the project, I chose to model for the series so I would have full control over my facial expressions and body language in order to startle viewers and elicit a feeling of discomfort. With the talent of a makeup artist using liquid latex, spirit gum, makeup and fake blood, the infectious appearance of the skin and the illusion of the vines, plants and sticks ripping through the human form in the later images were visually effective and aided in making the concept intentionally more realistic, unsettling and attractive.
